The Piqué Shirt

A Guide to a Classic

In the ever-shifting world of menswear, few garments manage to balance ease and elegance as well as the piqué shirt. Textured yet refined, comfortable yet considered, the piqué shirt for men is a quiet hero of the modern wardrobe. But its story is anything but new.

A Brief History of Piqué

Piqué fabric was first developed in the late 18th century in Lancashire, England, a product of the region’s innovative textile industry. Created on special dobby looms, piqué’s signature raised texture was originally designed to mimic the intricate quilting of Provençal garments but soon evolved into something entirely its own.

By the early 20th century, piqué had made its way into sportswear, particularly in tennis and golf, thanks to its breathability and structure. Most famously, it was the fabric of choice for René Lacoste’s revolutionary short-sleeved tennis shirt in the 1920s, now better known as the polo shirt. With its clean lines and athletic heritage, the piqué shirt became a symbol of modern leisure, smart but not stiff, polished but still playful.

As Ivy League style and European prep evolved through the 1950s and '60s, piqué shirts gained prominence in university campuses and coastal towns alike. Worn under blazers, paired with chinos, or layered with knitwear, they became essential pieces for men who valued subtle sophistication.

Why Piqué?

Piqué cotton stands out not just for its appearance, but for how it feels. It features a fine waffle-like texture that allows air to circulate, keeping you cool in warmer weather while maintaining a crisp silhouette.

  • Breathable yet structured

  • Soft against the skin

  • Naturally wrinkle-resistant

  • Visually rich, even in solid colours

  • It’s this balance of texture and refinement that makes piqué shirts so endlessly wearable - a cut above the average shirt without ever feeling too formal.
